POST CONFERENCE TOUR

T-01. ECOLOGICAL TOUR

Itinerary: departure from Petra Christian University (PCU) campus for a visit to Mangrove Forest located at Wonorejo, the eastern part of Surabaya.

The forest is a big conservation and research area for Mangrove in Surabaya, developed by the city government to overcome the abrasion and environmental damage of the eastern shore of Surabaya. The area also has been developed into a tourist area which highlights the environment as well as community development in local mangrove habitat.  In the Mangrove forest, we will have some activities, such as exploring the forest and canoeing along the river.

From Mangrove forest, the journey will be continued to  Kampong Jambangan: an ecotourism kampong where the communities are known for their creativity in adding value to waste products. In this kampong, we will learn how to reuse and recycle house waste products, especially plastic products.

Next stop is Kampong Enceng Gondok. Enceng gondok (Eichhornia crassipes or water hyacinth) is a kind of water plants which rapidly colonize rivers and damage the river habitat. Surprisingly, people in the kampong have learned to utilize  the plants into some kinds of useful and interesting handicrafts like handbags, lampshades, and furniture. While visiting the kampong, we will observe and learn how the communities create the parasite plants into beautiful handicrafts.

From this kampong, we will enjoy lunch at O-Jamur Restaurant which serves unique cuisines made entirely from mushrooms. The tour will end at Petra Christian University campus, by exploring the newly-build P1-P2 buildings in PCU which are designed to be high-efficient and low-energy buildings.

Price per person for a minimum of 20 participants:

  • International participants : USD 20

  • Local participants : IDR 250,000
